There are many reagents that can be added in vacuum blood collection tubes, such as serum separation gel, anticoagulants, coagulants, etc. Among them, anticoagulants include heparin series and EDTA series products. However, in addition to these series of anticoagulants, there is another type of anticoagulant called "potassium oxalate", which is relatively rare but widely used. Few people in daily life know about its anticoagulant principle as an anticoagulant, so here we will focus on introducing it.
Product Name | Potassium oxalate |
Packaging specifications | 500g/bottle |
Product performance | White monoclinic crystal, easily soluble in water |
Main components | Potassium carbonate, oxalic acid, etc |
Purpose | Blood anticoagulants |
Manufacturer | Hubei Xindesheng Material Technology Co., Ltd |
In fact, the obvious advantage of potassium oxalate as an anticoagulant is its solubility. After blood collection, potassium oxalate in a test tube dissolves and separates oxalate ions, which react with calcium ions in the blood sample to form calcium oxalate precipitate, thus achieving anticoagulant effect.
Potassium oxalate is generally used for anticoagulation at a concentration of 0.1mol/L, with a ratio of 1:9 to blood. However, due to the high concentrations of potassium and sodium ions, it can easily cause dehydration and shrinkage of blood cells, while ammonium ions can cause blood cell swelling. Therefore, when measuring hematocrit without interfering with the morphology and volume of red blood cells, the ratio of potassium oxalate anticoagulant to blood in the test tube must be properly adjusted.

However, it should be noted that although potassium oxalate is often used in blood tests, it cannot be used to determine all components in the blood. Therefore, it is not suitable for the determination of potassium and calcium ions, as well as blood slide tests. It cannot be used for white blood cell and platelet counting because it can cause platelet aggregation and affect the morphology of white blood cells.
The potassium oxalate produced by Desheng is in powder form and is prepared into a solution with a volume of 0.2ml and a concentration of 10%. It is not simply placed in a test tube. Next, gently tap the test tube until the solution is evenly distributed around the tube wall. Then, place the evenly distributed test tube in an oven below 80 ℃ to dry.
At this time, the drying temperature in the oven should not be too high. If it is too high, potassium oxalate will decompose into potassium carbonate, thereby losing its anticoagulant effect. Therefore, it is necessary to control the temperature well. In routine blood testing and analysis, potassium oxalate is commonly used as an anticoagulant added to test tubes. Fresh blood samples that have just been collected can be stored for one year at temperatures below -20 ℃.
Desheng Biochemical has been producing blood collection tube additives for 20 years. As an established manufacturer, we prioritize the interests of our customers and strictly control the quality. Currently, we have a large number of serum separation gels, anticoagulants, coagulants and other products for sale, widely used in clinical medicine and in vitro diagnostic reagents, and have received praise from multiple partners.
